Total hydrocarbons refer to all hydrocarbons and their derivatives. The main pollutants to ambient air are the gaseous and liquid but highly volatile parts at room temperature. Non-methane total hydrocarbons generally refer to all volatile hydrocarbons and their derivatives (mainly c2-c8) except methane. Under the experimental conditions, the total amount of gaseous hydrocarbons and their heteroatom-substituted compounds measured by a hydrogen flame io nization detector (fid), minus the co ntent of the methane part, is the total non-methane hydrocarbons. The high co ncentration of non-methane total hydrocarbons generally means that the co ntent of organic pollutants in the air or exhaust gas is high. In addition to being directly harmful to human health, under certain conditions, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere are formed by a series of photochemical reactions through sunlight irradiation. Photochemical smog further harms the enviro nment and humans. Therefore, the comprehensive emission standard of air pollutants clearly stipulates the maximum allowable emission concentration, maximum allowable emission rate and fugitive emission limit of non-methane total hydrocarbons.
The accepted method for the determination of total non-methane hydrocarbons is to measure the total hydrocarbons and methane co ntent separately, and then subtract the two to obtain the total non-methane hydrocarbon content. For total hydrocarbon determination, the sample gas is usually co ntinuously flowed into the fid detector at a fixed flow rate, or a fixed volume of sample gas is brought into the fid detector using a carrier gas (zero gas), which is the standard method for total hydrocarbon determination.
